Os X Mountain Lion To El Capitan

To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility and performance of your Mac, it's important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

Learn how to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, the latest version of macOS.

Purchase Mac OS X Lion installer on the Apple Store. When it was still Lion DiskMaker, DiskMaker X had the ability to burn DVDs too. Older versions are available here. Download DiskMaker 2.0.2 ( ZIP file, about 3 MB). NB: this version of DiskMaker X is not able to build a Mavericks installer from Mac OS X 10.6.8.

  1. Approximately 90% of all Macs were eligible to upgrade to El Capitan when the operating system launched on Sept. El Capitan will run on the same Macs that have run Yosemite, Mavericks, 2012's Mountain Lion and 2011's Lion. On the flip side, a sizable number of Macs continued to run outdated editions of OS X last month.
  2. You REALLY want to upgrade your hardware first. The stock 2011 MBP has 4GB RAM and a weedy little 5400RPM hard drive. Do yourself a big favor and drop.

The version of macOS that came with your Mac is the earliest version it can use. For example, if your Mac came with macOS Big Sur, it will not accept installation of macOS Catalina or earlier.

If a macOS can't be used on your Mac, the App Store or installer will let you know. For example, it may say that it's not compatible with this device or it's too old to be opened on this version of macOS. To confirm compatibility before downloading, check the minimum hardware requirements:

  • macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements
  • macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements
  • macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements
  • OS X El Capitan 10.11 hardware requirements
  • OS X Yosemite 10.10 hardware requirements

I am running Mountain Lion on Mac mini late 2012. I loaded El Captain from Apple Store and start the upgrade procedure. After a while the system rebooted and got a OS installation screen. After a while I got the message 'OS X could not be installed on your computer no packages were eligible for install' with a restart button, pressing 'Restart' the computer Restarted came age to the OS instillation screen and after few minutes - same message again. The only option was to restart with 'Command R' and to reinstall Mountain Lion.
